How to work out how much you will need in a bathroom?

First measure the length and width of the room in meters – for an average sized bathroom this would be approx 2.5m x 2.5m
Then multiply these measurements – which gives a square meterage of 6.25m².

Now it is necessary to remove from this total any bathroom furniture or other fixed items of furniture that may block the heat, i.e. sinks, toilets and any units.
A normal bath is 800mm wide by 1800mm long so this would give a square meterage of 1.44m².

Then remove an additional 10% from the total to allow for a gap around the edges – this would be 0.48m², so therefore 4.81m2 – 0.48m2=4.33m²
Therefore, a total area to cover would be 4.33m² and the nearest mat kit to cover this would be 4m².

This applies to both underwood systems and under carpet systems.

When installing insulation first, you need to order enough to cover the WHOLE FLOOR AREA, i.e. do not remove the 10% as the insulation needs to go right up to the edges. This is so you get an even sub floor finish for the wood or carpet to be placed on to.

How to work out how much you will need in your kitchen?

First measure the length and width of the room in meters – for an average sized kitchen this would be approx 3m x 4m.

Then multiply these measurements – which gives a square meterage of 12m².

Now it is necessary to remove from this total any kitchen units or other fixed items of furniture that may block the heat.

A normal kitchen unit is 0.6m wide. If the units were along 3m of wall in the kitchen, this would be 0.6m x 3m = 1.8m²

Then remove this total from the area. 12m2 total kitchen area – 1.8m² of kitchen units = 10.2m².

Then remove an additional 10% from the total to allow for a gap around the edges – this would be 10.2m² – 10% = 9.18m².

Therefore, a total area to cover would be 9.18m² and the nearest mat kit to cover this would be 9m².

Electrical Requirements

The System should be protected by an RCD.

In most cases a 13Amp fused spur is fitted before the thermostat.

Our systems operate on 230V 50Hz.

In bathrooms the thermostat control should be mounted outside the bathroom.

The heating cable must never be cut.

To facilitate installation the cold lead wire can be cut to suit.

Mat Layout & Fixing

Please relate to the floor planning before installing your heater mat as this is very important.

When installing your heater mat always leave a minimum of 50mm unheated gap around the room perimeter.

Make sure that the mat can fit the floor area to be heated. It is better to have just too little than too much over.

Remember, never cut the heating element. Cut only the fibreglass mesh carrier when needed and turn or flip the mat to meet your requirements.

When installing you must ensure that none of the heating element is within 5cm of another heating element.

Please see customisations to assist you on this.

If you need assistance working out which size mat kit to purchase, We offer a FREE design service if you have a drawing or plan of your room.

10 Rules to Ensure Correct Installation of Your Heating Mat
1. Never cut the heating element wire.
2. Heating element must always be protected by an RCD.
3. Never leave excess heating mats rolled up under units or fixtures.
4. Never run the cold leads (connection leads) underneath or across the heating element wires.
5. Never cross or overlap the heating wires.
6. Do not switch the system on for at least 2 weeks after fitting the floor finish; you need to wait for the adhesive / latex / grout to dry naturally.
7. Do not cut or prepare tiles on top of the fitted heating system. When other work is going on in the room, avoid damage by keeping the heating covered until you are ready for the final floor finish to be put down.
8. The cables should never be spaced at intervals closer than 5 cm or further than 10 cm apart.
9. Only a qualified electrician should connect the heating element to the mains.
10. Do not forget to install the floor sensor for your thermostat in its tube when you install the system.
